So my epiphany from the talames story I shared yesterday is the accumulation of what I've been writing about. When you travel power dynamics exist, but instead of ignoring the power dynamic or trying to escape them (for instance sleeping in bushes instead of a hotel to be more like the locals when the locals look at you crazily cuz why aren't you sleeping in a hotel if you can afford once, you're just playing poor) you can use the inequality to the advantage of your allies and support the local people. I have alot of insight into marketing and video editing and such. I can exchange that knowledge with the locals in exchange for their knowledge if they want to share. Teachability, humility and creativity is how I want to travel.

Story time (content: my last 3 words only posts) In South America I went to a festival, lots of hippie, new age people who acted all lovey and one with the earth with cacao ceremonies and talk of ancestors of the land and all that hoohah. Well when actually confronted with a local connection (a woman who came in to sell tamales) they rejected her. They said "we don't want your tamales leave!" One of my friends turned that tourish vs. local dynamic on his head. He chased the lady down and asked how much to buy all of her talames? He bought them, then brought them in and told each person who approached him what had happened and how much the talaes were. He bought all the talames from the local women, then resold them all to the bullshitting hippies, and gave her twice the money back. This story is getting long so I will share my epiphany tomorrow.

I called a friend who travels alot in an ethical way to seek advice on the theme I've been sharing the past two days. She encouraged me not to critique the inequality between the tourism dynamic and the locals unless I am actively changing it. She also said not to ignore it or act as if it's not there...acting as if the color of our skin doesn't give us different priviages, it does unfortunately, but in recognizing it use that to make a difference. I have an EXCELENT story of an experience in South America that I will share with you tomorrow.
